Business Brochures: Break Away From The Ordinary

By: Charles White

This is either something you can create yourself or have an expert design it for you. In some way, this is something any business establishment must have: business brochures.

Creating a brochure can be very simple as it may seem if you have the technical knowledge and if you have decided on what information to feature. But we daresay you still need to know the process of making high-quality brochures that will create a great impression for your company.

- Understand that it's a marketing material

The first step in making a brochure is to understand that a brochure is a marketing material that should evoke interest for your company. When you understand this, you will want to sit down and determine your company's Unique Selling Proposition. You will also want to think about why you want to make a brochure.

You may have a lot of reasons for wanting to have a brochure, write them down from the most important to the least important. These are just some of the few reasons why a company would want to create a brochure: (a) introduce a new product or service, (b) for direct mailing purposes, (c) for business reply mail.

- Form your team

A brochure can be divided into two parts: content and design. As the size of the brochure is variable, you may create a three-man team comprising the project manager, content writer and designer.

In writing content, keep in mind that the best copy is a compelling copy that delivers your message. Hire a good copywriter to make up your message. The content should be related to the purpose for which the brochure is being created. Do you want to promote this great new product you're selling?

Make sure your content contains all the necessary praise release on the product both on the FRONT and the BACK of the brochure. Remember, you can't control how your target audience will receive your brochure, so it's better to play on the safe side.

Your design, on the other hand, should attract audience attention.

- Determine your brochure format

When you have already determined your content, you're in a better position to determine what is the correct size of your brochure. Brochures come in two standard sizes: 8.5" x 11" and 11" x 17".

- Choose the paper format

The most common paper stock is glossy or matte and they are also the most affordable. However, if you're designing a brochure to impress or to evoke feelings or create an impression of strength and quality, you may opt for stock paper that is heavier. Just veer the design away from the fold line of the brochure because the ink might cause the paper to crack.

- Find a reliable and capable printer

Just what do we mean by capable printer? A capable printer is one that is capable of a Pantone Matching System (PMS ) for print jobs in one color and two colors. Also, the printer should also be able to print CMYK colors on a digital printer or a printing press.
