Children Learn To Pray

Teaching children to pray can be accomplished with consistent application of 5 simple techniques.

1. Let your children see you praying. Your example is a powerful teacher. We have all heard the saying, "I would rather see a sermon any day than to hear one.

2. Where is my toy? My children become very emotional when they cannot find a toy. Try using this as an opportunity to promote their belief in God. The toy will be found and they will make a connection with faith and prayers.

3. Repetition and rituals. Repetition is a good teacher especially when you combine that with meals, waking up and bed time. These become habit forming.

4. Make prayer personal. You can teach your children to develop a relationship with God at a very early age. They can learn to make their prayers conversational.

5. Spiritual stage fright. As adults sometimes we feel nervous when we are asked to say a prayer in public. Perhaps we are afraid we will stumble over our words. An imperfect prayer from the hear is far more meaningful that eloquent prayers that are repetitious. Our children we learn from our example.

6. Flexibility. Teach your children that a short prayer is more important than no prayer at all. If you are hurrying out the door and are loading up in the car and you have forgotten morning prayers, at least have one of the children say a prayer while you are driving.

"Families that pray together stay together," is a quote I have heard at different times in my life and I believe it is true. Our children learn to pray by watching our examples. When we forget to pray take a few minute right when we remember and utter a prayer even if it is brief.

I receive Christmas cards from people that assume I share their sentiments about Christmas. This is my dilemma: how to I reciprocate? My first inclination is to simply say thank you, and not to reciprocate with a similar card, because giving a similar card would be dishonest for me.
