Choosing The Right Senior Care Facility

By: Jerry Glynn

The decision to place a loved one in an assisted living facility is never made without careful thought and consideration of all of the options involved, and the choosing the right facility is a decision not be taken lightly either. This article will provide some tips to help you pick the right one.

When you first visit the facility, be sure to check to see that a patient bill of rights, a license, an emergency evacuation plan, and an admissions agreement are all clearly posted. Look around at the residents. Do they seem happy and content, do they look clean and well cared for. Are there activities taking place. Of course, these criteria may vary, depending on the type of facility, but all facilities should be clean and well staffed, with the above documents clearly posted.

Ask to be taken on a tour of the facility, and observe the interaction between the seniors and the staff members. Are there smiles and frequent interaction. Is there a schedule of activities posted, and are alternatives posted for residents with physical or mental limitations. What do the menus look like for the week. Does the facility accommodate residents with dietary restrictions, religious, dietary, or otherwise. Do they offer fresh fruit and vegetables. If possible, eat a meal there for yourself.

As people age, familiar objects can take on significant importance, so ask whether or not furnishings from home and other personal items can be brought in. Of course, this again will depend on the type of facility and whether residents live in private rooms or room with someone else, but it is important to known and to take into consideration nevertheless.

Be sure that you are aware not only of all of the fees associated with the facility, but what they include as well. Basic fees generally cover room and board, and services such as dispensing medications, bathing, and in and out of bed transfer may cost extra. Rates also may raise as the needs of residents inccrease, so ask if the facility is required to notify you sixty days in advance of a rate change, and find out what their policy is concerning rate increases for change of condition.

These are just some of the many factors to consider when you are choosing an assisted living facility. Do your research, conduct drop in visits to facilities that you are considering, and be sure to ask the relatives of the residents in the facilities for their recommendations and opinions, and you will be well prepared to make this important decision.
