Employing The Right Singapore Maid

By: Dave Keel

Moved to Southeast Asia and looking for a Singapore maid? It's difficult to find good help and hire people to deal with all your household needs. The person one hires should be trusted and be a hard working person. What are the steps to finding the right maid for your house?

Agency

Probably the first thing that you want to do is get information on agencies. Employment agencies for maids are found all over Singapore and you can get valuable information about certified maids in the country. Going to an agency will allow you access to information and resumes on those seeking employment as a Singapore maid. Some of these agencies can even be found online, such as NetMaid (http://www.netmaid.com.sg) and MaidLibrary (http://www.maidlibrary.com.sg). Sites such as these can point you in the right direction.

Why An Agency?

A maid agency is probably the best place to go if you are looking for a trustworthy and loyal employee for your household. Agencies can make this activity much simpler for you. Most resumes for the position of housemaid are passed on to agencies in Singapore. This is good for both the employee and the employer as it makes any transaction safe and it also protects both parties' rights.

Preferences

After you choose an agency, prepare to do some paperwork. Documents that you submit will tell the agencies what you are looking for in a maid. This information will help the agencies single out the right people for you. Information that you provide regarding your preferences can include factors such as age and educational background. The more preference information that you provide, the more narrowed down your choices will be.

Ethnic Background

In Singapore, you cannot just hire a person from any country in the world. Most agencies will advise you that you can only hire maids from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) approved source for Foreign Domestic Workers. Countries that are approved in most Singapore agencies are Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh. With this information, you can better prepare yourself by looking into the background of each country and their people. This will help you avoid any misunderstandings in culture.

Your Responsibilities

Hiring a Singapore maid is something that you, as an employer, should be responsible for. This is the same for any country you live in and involves you hiring people. Singapore laws state that an employer is responsible for all medical expenses of his or her maid. This is one of the expenses that include medical care and hospitalization fees.

Security

Also known as a Security Bond, Singapore agencies will expect that you pay a deposit of $5000 to cover costs of repatriating a maid. Remember that a Singapore maid will most likely be from another of the countries that were mentioned previously. This deposit is made with the Work Permit Department or at MOM. Keep in mind that failing to repatriating a maid after the end of her work permit will mean that you lose that security deposit.

It may seem difficult o have to go through so much to hire a Singapore maid. These processes, however, are standard practice when hiring a maid through an agency but it is worth it since you will most likely find the most competent of employees.
