Essential House Tools

By: Jim Brown

What if one rainy night, you found yourself stuck with a leaky roof? At times when difficult situations arise, it is sad to say that we don't have a real neighborhood Spiderman or any hero for that matter, except a plumber or a repairman. But then again, do we really need any of them, especially when we now have hardware and stores that sell house tools?

All that's left to do is to get off our couches and buy those tools. It's not as hard as you think. As long as you know what you're doing, you can be a repairman yourself, and without the added cost since you already have your own tools. Really now, sometimes, we have to be our own hero. Here is a list of the top six most basic problems that anyone can encounter around the house along with the corresponding tools that you need.

1. Found yourself with a broken doorbell? Just rush off to the local hardware and grab multi-tester, wire-connectors, screwdriver to unscrew the doorbell, sandpaper or emery board to clean the contents and electric tape to wrap frayed wires.

2. Cracks on the wall could be due to earthquake. A putty knife is the most useful for spreading and scraping.

3. Stuck with a damaged tile? Get an awl or chisel to remove old grout from the damaged tile, a hammer to remove the damaged tile and a putty knife to spread adhesive, in order to replace the damaged tile.

4. You realize you want to fix your fence from the damaged your son caused when he ran his bike through it. Grab post-hole diggers to excavate, galvanized nails and hammer.

5. You see a spark from the outlet of your television. A circuit tester is the most essential thing when dealing with electric short circuit just to make sure a circuit is not active else you could get in trouble.

6. You just got home from a very exhausting meeting at the office and the last thing you need is seeing your kitchen flooded with water. Be a good scout and prepare these tools in case of leaking pipes: water plump pliers, just to hold the pipe tightly so, pipe cutter, for precision in cutting a pipe, reamer, to rid off residue, emery cloth, to clean a pipe, pipe wrench, to tighten the pipe, open-end wrench, to adjust loose bolts and nuts and a basin wrench for under the sink adjustment of bolts and nuts.
