How Much Furniture Should You Buy For Your Dollhouse?

Furniture adds so much to a dollhouse—it is what turns your creation into a tiny home, showcasing both beauty and personality. As you are looking for furniture, however, it can be very difficult to judge how much you will actually need. Below are some things to consider when determining how much furniture to buy, along with a few helpful hints.

Size and Number of Rooms In Your Dollhouse

The first indicator of how much furniture to buy is how many rooms your dollhouse has. Before you buy any furniture, you will want to decide what each room will be. Some ideas include a kitchen, a dining room, a living room, a family room, a play or rec room, a library or study, a sewing or craft room, a bedroom or bedrooms, a children’s room, a nursery, a laundry room, and bathrooms. Base these decisions on what each room will be by what rooms you want, where you want them, and how big the rooms are.

The size of rooms is a big factor in how much furniture you will want to buy, and vice versa! For example, some dollhouse enthusiasts love kitchen furniture and designate the biggest room for that; others enjoy decorating a spacious bedroom. Some rooms, such as bathrooms and laundry rooms, are chosen because very little furniture will fit inside them.

If you are just beginning to build your dollhouse kit, keep in mind that the number of rooms your dollhouse is supposed to have may not be the number of rooms you end up furnishing, for two reasons. First, you may decide once your kit is built that you would rather remove a partition somewhere in your dollhouse to make two smaller rooms into a larger one. Second, in some kits, some areas that are considered to be “rooms” may not be big enough to really furnish. This is especially true of narrow rooms that contain stairways—you may just want to have these rooms be hallways.

Size of Furniture and Furniture Sets

Keep in mind that many furniture items are sold in sets, and some of these sets contain many items. As a test, you can buy one small roomful of furniture with three to five items. We recommend either a bedroom set or a living room set. Place these small sets in each room of the house. If that is all you have room for in one room, you know not to buy more furniture for that area. If you have lots of space left over in another room, you can gage how many items you will buy (many sets have 6-8 pieces, and some have 10, 12, or even more). Even though kitchens will have very different types of furniture, this test still may be useful to determine how many items your kitchen will have. The big exception to this test is bathrooms—most bathrooms will be too small for even a smaller bedroom set to fit inside.

Most websites give the dimensions of the dollhouse furniture they sell. If it is helpful to you, you can measure out the dimensions on pieces of paper, cut out the pieces and label them with the furniture items they represent, and place them in your dollhouse room to see if everything will fit. Though this does not give you a full visual representation of how your room will look when it is furnished, it saves you the expense of buying a set that you may not want to use.
