How to Choose the Right Computer Desk for a Home Office

By: Matt Boyce

There are a number of reasons to pick the right computer desk for your home office, and those reasons include being more productive, good ergonomics, and saving time and money. Most people do not have an adequate computer desk in their home offices, if they have even designated a home office area at all. However, learning to choose the right computer desk for your needs can allow you to be more organized and healthy overall.

First, if you do not have a designated office area, you should decide on one before you purchase a computer desk. Also the type of computer desk you need is determined by the work you do, so you need to do an analysis of your space and needs before you head out to the store. You need to measure your space, and decide if you will need area for filing, organizing, and more. For instance, if you need a lot of space to spread out your paperwork, purchasing a desk that has some space for your computer and some space for you to spread out will benefit you more than a small, compact corner unit.

Knowing how you will be using your computer desk and the space available will also help you determine how many pieces you can purchase. Essentially, you will at least need a desk, a chair, and a storage or shelving unit. There are computer desks that work in small spaces, allowing more compact ways to store your work-related items, and there are also L-shaped desks that offer you a computer workspace and room to spread out.

If you store your data in binders or files, you will need to consider a file cabinet or shelving, as well as the desk surface itself. There are a number of computer desks that come with shelves or filing areas built in. There are also modular units that allow you to build a custom area with different pieces. Knowing what your needs are will keep you from getting overwhelmed by your options, because you will know exactly if or how you can use every piece of your computer desk.

Your computer desk will not only need to fit your business needs, but your physical needs as well. Old desks may be beautiful, but they may not be ergonomically correct, causing you back and wrist pain. Good ergonomics from your computer desk and chair mean that you will be seated in a good position to decrease the stress on your body.

There are a number of factors that go into choosing a good computer desk for your home, but ultimately the choice boils down to needs and comfort. Your computer desk should have all the elements you need to remain organized so that you will be more productive. It should also be comfortable to use so that there is little stress on your body, allowing you to avoid Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and other office work-related pain. When you find a good computer desk that fits your needs, you will find a great return on your investment as your business reaps the benefits.

Here are some of their 'untils': "Until 'they' accept my role, and I am officially 'anointed' as leader"; "until I've got 'all my ducks in a row' - finished everything I have to do";
