How to Stop Your Dog From Biting Just About Anything It Sets Its Eyes On

By: Mike Kershaw

Dogs are perhaps one of the most adorable pets that you can have in your home. However, once your dog starts biting your relatives, friends and other guests, he may not seem quite as adorable as he was before. In fact, if you do not control you dog's biting habits, he or she can actually cause damage to your home or worse, hurt someone in the process. Having said this, you have to know how to stop your dog from biting before everything goes out of control.

If you want to learn how to stop your dog from biting, you have to apply the following tips:

- First of all, you have to know that many dogs with biting problems are normally taken away from their mother too early. This is because the mother and her little puppies have their way of teaching each other how to stop chewing and biting.

- Once the little teeth start growing and the pups start nipping the mother, she usually goes away from the area. This action gets the pup thinking about his deed. And when the pup starts biting other mates as well, the mates have the tendency to yelp loudly, which will then startle the biting pup. If the pup still continues biting others despite the reactions, other pups fights back and will nip him harder. This will be a lesson that he would not forget.

- One way on how to stop your dog from biting is to buy chew toys for your dog. Buy those that are mentally challenging to your dog so that it will take him more time to figure it out . Otherwise, your dog will prefer to bite on your chair legs or even your own legs. Most of the times, dog owners who are dying to stop their dog's biting problems buy chew toys with hidden treats inside. With the intensity of the sense of smell that a dog has, he will keep chewing on it all day until he gets the treat hidden inside. When the dog realizes that he will have no benefit from biting you, he will look forward to more favored chew toys instead.

- When a pup bites you, do what the mother or little mates would do – shout out loud. Do this noise as a sign that his bite actually hurt you . Even if your puppy is just chewing on your pajamas, shoe laces or slippers, you can still scream as if you are really in pain. If this does not work and your dog still keeps on nipping and biting you, just do what the mother always does and leave the room. When the dog follows you, check if he still nips or bites you. Do this regularly until your dog gets used to it.

- The final alternative on how to stop your dog from biting is through locking the dog in a crate. This will temporarily hold him for a while, until he keeps quiet and is sorry for what he did. However, do not hold your puppy in the crate for too long for he can develop emotional issues. A simple timeout will work out fine. When the dog keeps whining , release him from the crate and play with him. The only time you lock him in a crate is when he goes too far.

Now that you know how to stop your dog from biting, the only thing left for you to do is apply these tips. In no time, you will find that your dog will stop biting anything or anyone in your home.
