Intel Vs AMD

By: piru

The processor market is confronted with two main opponents. They are Intel and AMD. Maximum portion of the processor market is trapped by these two players and the rest is divided into other companies like Nvidia, Cyrix etc

Intel has always been at the top of the processor souk, while AMD is always been a good choice for the low-end market. But with the creation of PIII (Celeron) processor, Intel entered the low-end market, which basically knocked Cyrix out of the game. Because of AMD's quick growth, revenues, and quality management early in its life, AMD was able to hold on to market share and stay alive. These days AMD is giving a good competition to Intel. AMD always launched their quality products in the market at genuine prices. That's why they are able to compete with the processor king Intel in the market.

Latest launch by AMD in the market is Phenom series. There are three processors in the Phenom series. They areï€ ï€ Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition, Phenom X4 9350e and ï€ Phenom X4 9150e. While the latest launch by Intel is its Atom processor that creates a boom in the market and everybody is trying to get that processor. The fore coming products from Intel are Larabee and Nehalam series (an up gradation to the Intel’s Core 2 chip).

The comparison between these two processors is generally made on the basis of performance and the price. We can compare the prices of Intel and AMD processors by reviewing the following table:-

Model ( Intel processors) Clock speed Cores Price
Core 2 Duo E6300 1.83GHz 2 $183
Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz 2 $224
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz 4 $851
Core 2 Extreme QX6700 2.66GHz 4 $999

Model ( AMD processors) Clock speed Cores Price
Athlon 64 X2 4400+ 2.3GHz 2 $170
Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz 2 $222
Athlon 64 FX-72 2.8GHz 4 $799
Athlon 64 FX-74 3.0GHz 4 $999

After studying the above table, we can easily summarize that the two opponents are competing neck to neck with each other and these companies bring various tempting offers from time to time for the consumers to sturdy their hold in the market. In this head-to-head battle, there were 6 different classes to be marked on. These categories are:

* day-to-day computing
* multitasking
* photo editing
* MP3 encoding
* gaming
* video encoding

According to market report, AMD not only beat, but crushed Intel in all of these areas during last 3 months. Over the last 3 months, Intel's stock has gone from $23.50 to $21.25 and this is about a 10% drop, while AMD's stock price over the last 3 months has gone from $23.00 to $41.80, the price has almost doubled.

At the ending note, we can sum up the above discussion by saying that Intel is still a big player in processor market and AMD has to work very hard to come up to the mark. No doubt, the company is doing its best in the market and slowly it is coming up.
