Marijuana Addiction and Withdrawal

By: Ilya Walker

Marijuana addiction is a topic that doesn't get much serious consideration. Drug groups sometimes lump it together with other addictive substances but most people rightly don't regard it as the same sort of addiction as one can get with harder drugs. However, it's estimate that a small percentage of chronic smokers suffer are indeed addicted to marijuana.

If you're wondering what it's like to be addicted and go through withdrawal, let's take a look at the common withdrawal symptoms reported by marijuana users.

Many people report a general feeling of anxiousness. This is also described as nervousness or crankiness. This usually manifests as being grumpy and no fun to be around. The user may find it very easy to snap at other people and can become quite irritable while going through withdrawal. This typically last a few days.

Beyond this condition, users report having problems sleeping, oversleeping, and having nightmare, feeling both hot and cold at once (similar to the flu). Bouts of sadness and feeling depressed is very common too. These are all classic withdrawal symptoms, but they too will pass.

On top of all this is the presence of an intense desire to use again. And this is the essence of addiction: an near overwhelming impulse to go and acquire the drug, and use again, despite the intention to do the exact opposite. Making it out through the withdrawal experience and past the initially overly strong desire to use again is the hardest part.

It's good to report though that after a few days and up to a week or two, nearly all these withdrawal symptoms will fade out of the persons life and go away entirely. The exception is the urge to use again - that is something many will keep with them and will simply have to control via self discipline and support. Controlling that urge is the key to remaining free in the long run!
