Restaurant Equipment Basics

By: Patricia Farnham

There are several issues you need to consider when you it comes to buying equipment for your restaurant. Sometimes though decisions are going to be made for you. For example if you decide to invest in a franchise they will dictate how everything is set up. They will get the equipment you need and all you have to do is come up with the money to pay for it.

For those that plan to operate an independent business, there is more freedom to do it your way. You may choose to buy new equipment or you can get a good deal on used items. There may be a restaurant business in your area that has shut down and you can get a low price on what you need. Auctions are another great place to purchase used restaurant equipment.

Used equipment for your restaurant can be reliable but you need to make sure. Carefully inspect all of it so you will know for sure. You don't want to be in the middle of a lunch rush and your grill goes out. You also don't want to continually invest in paying for expensive repairs.

Since equipment is such a huge expense for this type of business it needs to be planned very carefully. Should you decide you want to have new equipment you need to look for quality brands. You also want to get a long term warranty on it. This way you can have the costs of any repairs covered by the manufacturer. There are often limitations to such warranties so read the information carefully.

Check with your local health department and fire department before you buy any equipment for your restaurants. They may have some codes in place that prohibit the use of certain types of it. Don't assume things are going to work in your favor and just buy them. You could end up losing money when they don't pass an inspection and there is very little chance that other people will buy it from you.

Pay attention to the codes in your area as well before you buy anything. They can be verified with the local fire department and health department. These codes can be different for each area so don't just assume that you already know what they are. Buying equipment for your restaurant that doesn't pass the inspection means you are out the money you paid.

Don't overlook the issue of making sure you have the right sources of power for the equipment you purchase. You may get a heck of a deal on a gas stove for the kitchen but it can be expensive to change everything over if it is only set up for an electric stove. You need to make sure you have enough power to successfully operate all of the items you need as well.

Take your time to carefully plan out what type of equipment you need for your restaurant. You need it to be very efficient when you lay it out so that all operations flow smoothly. You also want to be in compliance with all regulations. At the same time you want dependable equipment that is worth the price you pay for it.
