Stop Dog Chewing – What You Need to Know

By: Mike Kershaw

If you at present have a dog as your pet, you most probably have encountered dog chewing. Chewing might seem normal but it can be annoying for the owners. Dog chewing can be harmful to some dogs since they can start chewing objects such as electrical cables and poisons. They may also start chewing on stuff that you find valuable. Remember that dogs cannot tell the difference between a costly shoe and a chewing toy. Dogs do not think like humans so as early as now, you better stop dog chewing. But how do you do it?

At the outset , you need to stop dog chewing habits before it actually starts. This requires you, the owner, to not let your dog be alone so there is no chance for him to chew on anything. If your dog tends to chew objects while you are not at home, keep your dog in a kennel run or crate. On the other hand, if you do not want to hold your pet in such manner, just be sure that you keep things and materials that you do not want your dog to bite and chew.

If your dog has this particular liking for an object (e.g. a furniture leg), this method is worth a try – coat that object with non-toxic yet foul tasting substances like cayenne pepper, Tabasco or hot sauce and bitter apple. More often than not , this method works but there is also a chance that your dog will just shift his attention to another object.

Also, when you see your dog in the act of biting or chewing onto something, give him a big "NO!" and replace whatever he is biting with a chewy toy. Praise your dog once he starts chewing the toy you gave. Bear in mind that you should never reprimand your dog whenever you catch him chewing. Let him know the reason why you are disciplining him in the first place.

Another good way to stop dog chewing or any other dog behaviors is through obedience training. In doing so , you not only prevent your dog's bad habits but you also get to earn your his respect and trust. Have your dog exercise a lot, not only physically but mentally as well.

Last but not the least , give your pet some of his favorite tasty dog treats and chews. Do not give him too much though. Remember that your goal is to stop dog chewing so your pet will not get the impression that he can chew any object. Just provide him with a few good ones and make it clear that whenever he wants to start chewing, he should do it on his toys and not on other objects.

Once you try the abovementioned methods, you can stop dog chewing for good. With common sense and patience, you will be able to get rid of your dog's bad habit in no time. Good luck!
