The Advantages of Learning Spanish

By: Dinah Leabeau

We reside in a world where learning to speak a language besides your native tongue can unlock windows of opportunities. Sometimes, however, you commit mistakes and people, in turn, may laugh at you. Do not be disheartened as this is part of the learning process.

Learning how to speak Spanish should not be difficult and there are many positive effects of adding this language to your repertoire.

Spanish as a Global Language

Recalling your European history lessons will let you realize that Spain, indeed, has ruled the second-largest empire for a total of four centuries. As a result, its colonies have adopted the Spanish language and up until now, have utilized it considerably.

Presently, Spanish is the world’s second most-spoken language. When you learn to speak Spanish, you can communicate fluently with over 320 million people worldwide! If you find yourself travelling through Latin America, Europe, and even Africa, you’ll soon notice that dialectal variations of the Spanish language are almost absent. With these, possibilities for longtime friendships and profitable business relationships are endless.

Economics and Politics

Economists believe that Latin America will be the next European Union. With the area’s infinite natural resources and untapped human resources, you can never relegate Latin America to the fringes of development. If and when you are inspired to learn to speak Spanish, you’re providing yourself with a head start.

Powerful organizations such as the United Nations, European Union, Union of South American Nations, Organization of American States and the Organization of Ibero-American States use Spanish as an official language. Thus, those who know how to speak the language can reap the business and employment opportunities that are generated by these organizations.

Cultural Benefits

Among the other cultural contributions is the rise of international artists (Shakira, Marc Anthony, Enrique Iglesias, Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz), celebrated directors (Pedro Aldomovar), and legendary painters. Paella, Bakalao and bullfighting also stem from the Spanish-speaking countries.

Even if these artists have English works, would it not be a rare positive feeling if you’re able to sing and dance to their tunes in the language at which they were originally written? How about reading the interpretation of the paintings in their original language? Would it be more enjoyable to watch the movies of Pedro Aldomovar without reading subtitles Or appreciate the books of Gabriel Garcia Marquez in their entirety?

Indeed, something gets lost in translation!

In conclusion, learning to speak Spanish gives you opportunities for employment, business, creativity and fun and adventure. After all, it is really better to step out of your own little world and experience the wonder that other worlds bring!

While these Spanish-speaking artists have their works translated into English, it will be nicer if you can actually sing and dance to their tunes and understand the lyrics word-for-word. It’s more wonderful to read the books of Gabriel Garcia Marquez in Spanish and to appreciate Pedro Aldomovar’s films sans the subtitles.

To sum it up, when you learn to speak Spanish, you’re opening doors for employment, creativity, and fun and adventure. After all, there’s nothing better than expanding your horizon and continuously improving yourself.

  • History of Melodic & Harmonic Minor Scales. By: Vasilis Isaakidis - Melodic & Harmonic Minor Scales Many advancing musicians are familiar with the harmonic and melodic minor scales but do not know how they came to be and why. Because music theorists could write volumes on the topic, this article will keep it short and sweet. If you take the A natural minor scale (from A to A, all white keys on a piano) and sharpen the 7th degree (G-G#), you now have the A harmonic minor scale. The sharpened 7th degree (G#) now acts as a leading tone to the tonic A. You can think of the notes as planets. Certain notes in any scale (particularly the tonic note) have something like a gravitational pull on the notes around them.

  • Barre Chords and the Use of Metronome By: Vasilis Isaakidis - For any beginner guitar student, the ability to play barre chords could be challenging. However, the effort to master the skills is well worth it. Any baree chord requires some technical ability but makes chord playning much simpler and easier. The beauty of the barre chord on the guitar is that it is part of a set of 'moveable shape' chords. What that means is that you have a specific shape for a specific chord and you can move that same shape around based on where the root of the chord is. For example, if you play a major barre chord shape for G on the third fret, the same shape will become C major if started on the 8th fret of the 6th string.

  • A History of Solar Power By: Anna Williams - Throughout history, the sun has been a subject of worship and speculation. Most ancient cultures have in fact deified the sun, due to its life-giving and energy-giving qualities. Thus, the subject of solar energy is one of the oldest subjects on Earth. It has gone through many evolutions and has been the subject of many schools of thought - starting with religion, and ending up in the field of science. In fact, though not many people know this, a large portion of the western civilization celebrates the returning of the sun each year, just as the ancients did thousands of years ago.

  • Hub of simple circuits By: sajeesh - Most of the things we use today for pleasure and ease have some or other kind of circuits. Therefore, we must have a little knowledge of it. Earlier I was of the opinion that the knowledge of operating the electronic items will do anything and everything. But with that little knowledge of operating a TV’s remote controller I could not operate the remote controller of my all new HVD player and the home theatre well. It’s true that I could put it on and listen to music. But the problem aroused when I wanted to watch a film with the effect of 5.1 channel effect of the home theatre. Then I had to ask some of my friends about it.

Physical education is a requirement in school, but when you homeschool your children you don’t have a gym readily available. So how do you offer physical education and after school sports to your children? Here are a couple of things you can try. One way to offer physical education to your children is to call the Boys and Girls Club in your area and see if they offer their gym to homeschoolers. If they don’t, see if they would allow you to set up a time two or three times a week and get all the homeschoolers to join you on those days.

  • ONLINE TUTORS: TUTORING HELP FOR STUDENTS By: Alicia Beg - Telepresence requires that the senses of the user, or users, are provided with such stimuli as to give the feeling of being in that other location. Additionally, the user(s) may be given the ability to affect the remote location. Therefore information may be travelling in both directions between the user and the remote location. Telephony allowed us to hear and interact with people far away; television brought us pictures from a distance. By combining the interactivity of telephones, the visual environments of television, the virtual environments of cyber world, and new kinds of information systems, it is now feasible to develop telepresence systems. The ongoing revolution in computing infrastructure is having a profound effect on the entire process of education.
