By: Arnold Chinger

If you have a reasonable suspicion that someone you know or love has become addicted to drugs, this article will present to you signs and behavior to watch out for. Depending on the substance involved, addiction behaviors can change considerably. However, there are a few themes that are come about from any addictive habit that will be apparent.

Drug addiction has an exhausting effect on the body. Individuals abusing drugs will show physical signs of their use. There may be an inexplicable increase in energy and an inability to fall asleep. A persons reactive time might be off, they might speak abnormally (slurred, oddly timing their words, etc) and act confused or disoriented. The body could see an increase in sudden weight gain or sudden wight loss.

Users who suffer from addictions in which the route of entry is to smoke them might reveal their actions by coughing consistently. Injected drugs will leave a needle mark trail on the arms (or other body parts.) Watch out for the wearing of long sleeved shirts in the wrong seasons, as this is often used to hide needle marks or scars on the arms. Finally, the presence of drug paraphernalia such as pipes, papers, foil, and lights suggest at least the presence of drugs and the potential for abuse.

While the effects on the body are obvious, the effects on the mind take their toll as well. This is likely the first clue you'll see before physical signs. Moodiness, anxiety, paranoia - these and related emotions are common mental effects that the toll of drug abuse has on a person. At a more extreme end, psychosis may develop from the prolonged use of substances. At the same time, understand that observing someone under the influence of certain hallucinogenic substances may mimic the signs of psychosis under the duration of the drugs effects. It should be noted that these are temporary effects.

The effects of drug addiction on the mind and on the body is of serious consequence. Taking note to see how a persons behaves, especially noting recent changes in behavior and out of character behavior habits, along with noting the emotional and mental state of a person, it is possible to see the signs of addiction. If you believe someone may have or be developing a drug abuse or drug addiction problem, it might be necessary to seek out the professional help of doctors, abuse counselors, support groups, and rehab centers.
