Website Designing - The Basic Requirements

By: Mistina Thomson

"With the increased use of internet, information is reaching remote places faster than any other communicating media, and this has geared up the business of website designing . Today every business wants to take advantage of the global market or reach its clients by websites. Many clients who come to the designers state a wrong reason for wanting their website which is often their competitors having own website or they do not want to be left behind in the market etc. Whereas the fact is no marketing strategy comes in free, launching a website often costs you to spend hefty amounts, and so you must target to achieve some profit from it.

Apart from business organisations, you will find websites of many non-profit organizations too. The NGOs and non-profit organizations launch websites to spread and share informations about their services, programs, expand membership, raise funds, for online registration before campaigning and conferences, managing collaboration, keeping contact and spreading public awareness etc.

Launching the website opens up a wide array of opportunities and the clients need to think what exactly they expect from their site. The designers can imagine, investigate and discover new ways of exploring the opportunities through website. You have to research on various aspects thoroughly before you plan to ask a designer for developing your website. These are -

1. There are several other sister organisations or your competitors in the market who have own websites. Ransack every feature of those sites and find out the main points which you need or that impress you. Involve others to help you. Finally list out the features you would like to keep on your site.

2. To target and define your audience is vital. Expand your vision to check whom you may include in the criteria of your service- the media, cross-issue businessmen, competitors, general people etc., who had not been thought of earlier. Also think how they can influence your business.

3. Mark the features from the proposed, planned or existing web document which need upgrading and managing at times. These are project descriptions, replying queries, testimonials, new products, recommendations etc. Evaluate old contents as they may seek modification. You have to manage a new workload and co-ordinate the print-media and online applications.

4. Now you are ready to ask for quotes from reputed designers or hire your in-house developer. Estimate all costs needed for advanced features such as advanced animation, audio or video clips, electronic slideshow, GIS mapping etc. Provide the developer with all details you have procured so far.

5. Designing website is audience-targeted and you should be very clear of this fact. Your aim is to allure viewers so that they stick to your site and return to see which in turn will increase traffic and you will gain benefit. Include every feature to interact with people and provide maximum information in attractive way.
