What Makes One Common ... Biblically?

By: Robin Calamaio

Does the Bible teach that some people are common ... and others are uncommon? If so, what are the grounds upon which such a determination is made? Are you assessed (biblically) as common ... or uncommon? Is it possible to even know such a thing? You may have some surprises waiting for you here!

When the scribes and Pharisees challenged Jesus about His disciples eating with unclean hands, this was part of His response. "There is nothing outside the man which, going into him, can defile him; But the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man" (Mk 7:15). When in private, the disciples asked Jesus about this statement. He added, "That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. For from within, out of the heart of man, proceed the evil thoughts and fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, envy, slander, pride (arrogance) and foolishness. All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man" (Mk 7:20 -23). The word we are interested in, is the one translated, "defile." The verb is koinoo, and the noun is koinos. Let's look at the primary meaning of this word.

For centuries, many thought the New Testament was written in a "Greek from God" - holy, heavenly and undefiled by man. But archeological digs began unearthing shopping lists and land deeds written in the same Greek – in the same time period! Bible scholars soon realized the Greek of the New Testament was actually the common language of the day. It is now called Koine Greek – Common Greek - from koinoo (v) and koinos (n).

Many words in this Greek are morally neutral. Context determines if they are to be understood as positive or negative. For example, Jesus told His disciples, "I have earnestly desired (epithumeo) to eat this Passover with you before I suffer" (Lk 22:15 ). But elsewhere, "everyone who looks on a woman to lust (epithumeo) for her has committed adultery with her already in his heart" (Mt 5:28 ). The first context is obviously positive, while the other clearly isn't. Such is the case with, koinoo (v), koinos (n). In a more positive light it means, "universal, generic, widespread … common." Thus, Koine Greek. But in a negative light, this word means, "profane, inferior - defiled." Such is the context in Mark 7: 15, 20-23.

From cover to cover, the Bible teaches that our natural, universal state – our common state - is one of moral defilement. "What man is there among you, when his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give what is good to those who ask Him?" (Mt 7:9-11). To be defiled is the common state of man.

The world has its own definition of what makes one common or uncommon. Fame makes one uncommon. Power makes one uncommon. Wealth makes one uncommon. But a heart that exudes "evil thoughts and fornications (porneia – sexual immorality of any sort), thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, envy, slander, pride (arrogance) and foolishness" … resides in a Commoner. To some scoffing Pharisees, Jesus said, "You are those who make yourselves righteous in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men (literally, high before men) is detestable in the sight of God" (Lk 16:15 ). One's position in life does not influence God's assessment in this area - and that is a great encouragement. So, based upon behavior, at any given moment, God views each of us as either common … or uncommon.

It would be nice to be able to claim I live in the place of the uncommon. But I do not think this is a spot anyone permanently occupies in this age. Sin - that all so common a companion - frequently raises its head. When I sin – whether by action or reaction – God looks at me and sees … a common man. Anyone could do what I just did. Sometimes sin deceives me, and sometimes it blinds me. But many times, I just decide to participate with it. Too often, I make myself a Commoner.

This life is one of continual process, change – and challenge. Ultimately, God alone determines our commonness, or uncommonness, event by event. Oftentimes, we do not know how we fared (or are faring) in a given situation. But, He has given us some tools (like the first passage in this Article) – so as to substantively assess ourselves in most circumstances.

So, at any particular time, we are viewed by God as uncommon ... or common. "There is nothing outside the man which, going into him, can make him common; But, the things which proceed out of the man are what common the man …That which proceeds out of the man, that is what makes him common. For from within, out of the heart of man, proceed the evil thoughts and fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, envy, slander, pride (arrogance) and foolishness. All these evil things proceed from within and common the man" (Mk 7:15 , 20-23). I do not want to stay a Commoner. I want God to be able to assess me as more and more uncommon. I want to give God the opportunity to say to those around Him, "What do you think of my son, Robin? Have you seen how uncommon he is?" Do you want to remain common?

  • Science or not Astrology is what I like to believe in By: Chandradevi - It is more modern, logical and almost scientific in approach today and has moved from it's ancient fortune telling roots and tendencies. Modern hand reading has evolved to something more akin to a correctional, motivational and something like a hand-holding tool which can be a great help to get your life back into perspective. It has emerged as an awesome way to introspect oneself and be able to chart out our lives in the right way, getting it back onto course ( If it went wayward, that is!).

  • Should I find a Christian roommate or live alone? 6 reasons to establish a Christian household By: Robin Weidner - When Christian campus students or singles consider a new living situation, a few questions might come up. Should I live alone? (It would be nice to have a place all to myself!) Should I find some roommates? (It would be great to split the bills!) If I do live with someone else, how do I choose? (Who would be easy to live with?) But for the follower of Jesus, these questions are tempered by some even bigger questions... What is God's will for my life? Does God care whether I live alone or with others? Are some things God could teach me through Christian roommates that I won't learn living by myself?

  • The Development of Human Evolution and Natures Gift By: Zahir Karbani - Recently, the number of miraculous magickal items gifted to adepts by Nature has been on the increase. So what is our relationship with faeries and nature spirits, and why is this so important? To understand this, we need to look at our place in the scheme of creation. We all begin our journey as pure awareness, at one with the source. As we separate and descend into time and space, there are many layers we descend through. First, in the pre-conceptual, the One divides into 50 archetypal energies. As these encounter resistance, they give form to the many Gods and Goddesses. From here, the ethers are created.

  • What Are The Commonly Used Buddhist Symbols? By: MIKE SELVON - The spirituality Buddhism offers is one of peace and contentment. While it is true that not everyone in the Western civilization is familiar with the Buddhist teachings, it can still be a form of art that many find gives them a sense of peace and tranquility. Buddhist symbols have become increasingly popular in the last ten years. Many decorators now incorporate some of the Buddhist materials when they are decorating. It is not meant as a sign of disrespect. Rather, they are used to bring others in touch with Buddhist art and the teachings that Buddhists practice. One of the most prevalent Buddhist symbols is the Buddha statue.

  • A Lack of Confidence! By: Michael A. Verdicchio - It seems like there is a lack of confidence in many things that people have previously trusted in. Financial institutions that have been around for over a hundred years are gone. Companies have gone bankrupt. The phrase, "job security" seems to be a misnomer. Shady practices of lending institutions have been exposed. The approval and confidence of government leaders in both parties is at an all time low. In fact, government officials currently have the lowest approval ratings ever- single digits! Some Americans even think they should all be fired! There is an enormous lack of confidence these days. There are serious concerns about the future. Many are worried and afraid.

  • One Way to be a Good Steward of Your Company By: Mark Arens - When you have come to the conclusion that God has given you leadership over your company to bring glory to Him and expand His Kingdom on earth, you have been given a key that will open up to many blessings for you and those you serve. Another way to further your alignment with these Christian principles, would be to team up with an organization such as the Christian Chamber of Commerce in your area. The Christian Chamber of Commerce provides a blueprint and tools to help lead Christian organizations in a manner that is pleasing to God, that honors Him by demonstrating love for and obedience to Him and that serves others in a Christ-like manner.

  • Warning: Do Not Fail to Learn the Revelation By: James Kobzeff - If you're a Christian, then you must not fail to learn the Revelation foremost because God wants you to learn the Revelation. It's true that the prophetic book is comprised of complex symbols and images that make it more difficult than casual reading. Nonetheless, it is God's intention for the Church to read, understand, and obey the sayings of Revelation for it is clearly stated that the vision is that "which God gave...to show His servants" (1:1). Before we dig in to the purpose for the prophecy though, it would be helpful to understand its origin.

  • Less is More, But Can More Be Less? By: Michael A. Verdicchio - In business, the phrase, "less is more," means that keeping things simple and clear will make for a better product. In other words, you don't need a whole lot of extras. Just keep it simple and your product will actually be "more" of what it would be if you were to overdo it. I understand how "less is more" can be beneficial. With focus and attention on the quality of one superior product instead of quantity of many inferior products, you can't help but end up with results that benefit both the company and the consumer. Now in life, I agree with keeping things simple, but only to a point. Let me explain.

  • Do You Believe in Signs? By: Blanca Stella Mejia - Do you believe in signs or does it depend on the sign. Well I have always known and understood that the Universe , God, Universal Source, however you choose to call it communicates to us on a daily basis through some form or another. I always explained to my children that God is not going to appear to you in the form that you think he/she will appear, but communicates through other people or situations or gives us little promptings through different things in our daily lives. We just need to be open to see and hear these things.
